What makes a good CEO?

Last week, I had the privilege of being involved in the recruitment of a new CEO for the trust where I serve as a non-executive director. It’s been a significant responsibility – appointing the person who will shape culture, drive improvement, and steer the organisation through the ever-changing landscape of education.

As we deliberated, I found myself reflecting on the qualities that matter most.

Is it a strong track record in education?

Is it commercial acumen and the ability to navigate complex financial challenges?

Is it deep sector expertise and strategic insight?

Or is it something more foundational – a clear vision and a deep commitment to values that inspire trust and unite people?

Of course, all of these matter. But for me, the defining attribute of an outstanding CEO isn’t found on paper – it’s found in how they bring others with them.

Their emotional intelligence.

Their ability to listen deeply, make wise decisions under pressure, and build a culture where people can thrive.

Leadership in a trust is complex. It calls for someone who can be both strategic and human – grounded in values, but agile enough to meet the demands of reality.

I’m encouraged by the calibre of the leaders who stepped forward. And I’m hopeful about the future.

🤔 What do you think makes a CEO exceptional in education today?
