The Hidden Cost of the Menopause

Are you dealing with the hidden costs of menopause?

Are you a high achieving leader who has developed her career, through hard work, determination, intelligence, integrity and success?

Are you the person who everyone looks to with respect, relying on you to direct, enable and support them through work and life's challenges?

Have you noticed subtle changes to how you lead as you enter peri-menopause or menopause?

Everyone talks about the visible symptoms of menopause, such as hot flushes, but it was the invisible symptoms that most affected my life and my ability to lead.

When I entered perimenopause I was holding down an executive level role in a multi-academy trust.

At that time, I was the second most senior in the organisation, and prided myself on being the leader who was constantly horizon scanning, and enabling and empowering leaders and teams that I managed. I was the person who everyone came to for information and advice, or for help to solve a problem.

During my mid-late forties, I started to notice that my sleep was disrupted. At first, I just woke more frequently, but this developed over time into a debilitating insomnia which left me laying awake for most of the night. This affected both my clarity and my ability to concentrate.

I also started to feel more anxious. I have always worried at times, but I could sense that sometimes I was losing perspective, and taking things more personally, that I should.

I experienced brain-fog and suddenly couldn't rely on my memory to recall information swiftly as before.

These symptoms gradually eroded my confidence.

At the same time, I was experiencing challenges that people in mid-life often experience, the gradual decline and death of both my parents.

This combination of menopausal symptoms, and mid-life challenges (mixed in with a global pandemic and people-pleasing tendencies) caused me to walk away from the career that I loved so much.

And I am not alone.

1 in 10 women leave a role because of menopause symptoms. (Fawcett Society 2022)

In addition to this, a huge number of women choose to reduce hours, or to turn down promotions, due to the symptoms they are facing.

Menopause-related symptoms cost the UK economy around £10 billion each year (Balance, 2022).

I've learnt that it doesn't have to be that way.

Menopause is a time of transformation. It's a powerful time, when we get to redefine who we are and how we lead.

Since the start of my menopause, I have created so much positive change.

I've shaped my career into something I love, and have total control over.

I've left behind things I didn't like doing.

I've formed new relationships, whilst others have been left behind.

I'm excited about my future - both in terms of my business but also in terms of my personal life.
