Servant Leadership

🤔 Do you ever cut off your nose to spite your face?

Sometimes I think that the ‘Leaders Eat Last’ approach, coined by Simon Sinek, can lead to leaders depleting themselves.

Whilst I totally agree with the idea of servant leadership, and serving our organisations and communities, there needs to be a caveat about not allowing this style of leadership to undermine leaders' wellbeing.

How often as a leader have you had to deal with that ‘emergency’ immediately rather than to attend to your own priority, whether that be professional or personal?

Like many things, I believe this is a balancing act.

For example, I am currently coaching a senior leader who is struggling to manage her own well-being. She consistently puts everyone else first, meaning that she has to do her own work in the evenings and weekends. She has signed up for coaching to help shift these habits.

However, she has also sometimes cancelled her sessions to serve others' priorities. This habit of putting others first is impacting her ability to develop strategies to better balance her work commitments and own personal needs.

In my experience, the leaders who struggle in this way are the loveliest people.

However, it is this kind and considerate nature that can become their Achilles heel.

🤔 Are you a leader struggling to protect your own boundaries?

🤔 Do you need help managing your workload and others' expectations of you?

I can help.
